Such events as the chaos downtown that led to a deadly shooting right in the middle of Millennium Park have led people to cancel trips, meetings, and events in Chicago because they don't feel safe.

As CBS 2's Tara Molina reported Tuesday, hotel, restaurant, and city business operators have been hopeful for a great return this summer – the first summer since 2019 in which COVID-19 restrictions have not limited most options."The Chicago economy can't afford for hotels to fail. It can't afford for tourism to go down," said Michael Jacobson, president of the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association."So that's why we need to figure out a solution to this problem.

But this past weekend, those picturesque images were replaced by video showing fights on downtown streets in the shadow of landmarks such as the Chase Tower, people throwing things at cars and jumping on them, and gunfire that took the life of 16-year-oldThis comes as crime numbers near an all-time high in the Loop. The tables below show violent crime trends for the year through May 9 compared with past years – first for the whole city, then for the Loop.

This comes as all kinds of summer fun is back on the books - street fairs, concerts, farmers' markets, and all sorts of other events from one end of the city to the other. A total of 88 events are scheduled this month through September just at McCormick Place.

Anyone else see a trend here

The criminal class in Chicago is hunting our children down! I don’t give one iota when criminals get shot! Armed or unarmed, don’t care! Too f’in bad. Stop raising stone cold killers! Support police to keep shooting.

'Experts' 🙄 um. We don't need experts to point that out 🤦🏼‍♀️

What did the so called experts think what was going to happen! Bad news day after day!

Look ALL Black to me. But I'm racist...

It took experts to tell you it was bad? Um.. ok.

So the parents aren't being held accountable for any of this

Nothing New, all of this started when dough boy, beetle juice and good old Kim took over. You vote democrat this is the outcome. Crime rate is at all time high, highest taxes. Who ever voted them in, I hope you are happy with the results.

Who would have ever thought that going to Detroit sounds better can coming to Chicago?

No kidding...

Time to get rid of the mayor and get someone that supports police unions to do their jobs without criticism of Vax or no Vax. Nobody cares if you got it do your job and get these mfs off the streets.

Who would want to visit with all the wild animals running around!

Imagine living downtown. I do, it's hell.

According to a list of major cities even Indianapolis and Milwaukee have more crime than Chicago. St Louis was number one.

According to Lightfoot, this is what ‘fun summer activities’ looks like 🙂

GunViolence & crime. No, it’s not like any big city. It’s destroying a magnificent USA architectural city w best skyline & history. But complacency has its consequences. ❤️ CHICAGO but need a BREAK ‘til city & Dirtfoot makes crime a priority.

Mayor Lightfoot finally accomplished something…

How it’s possible? 🤣

If the so called experts were really experts they would have no problem initiating and implementing a plan to fix it. Actions speak louder then words

What would we do without experts?

Bring back Mayor Daley of 68.. When the city protected their cops, he also told the police shoot to kill for looters etc.

democRATS!!

Must be that 'white supremacy'

it's what happens when you ignore a whole group of people for decades truly The tale of two cities. When they was policing the hell out of the city it didn't do better. it's the reason why they're out of control they saw whether they did wrong or right they were still persecuted

CBS is about 2 years late

Tourists? I won't even go there from the suburbs anymore.

We banned ghost guns so should be good

Pls don’t lose confidence in Lori’s vision and leadership.

Anyone that complains about crime is racist.

Used to enjoy visiting the city often but not going as much anymore!

Yeah voters need to stop voting in pro criminal activists to positions of power.

Ya think?

Oh? SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE IF THE GOVERNMENT WOULD HAVE KEPT THEY NOSE OUT OF OUR BUISNESS THIS WOULDN'T BE HAPPEN CAUSE WE WERE TOLD IF WE DISCIPLINE OUR KIDS YOU GETTING LOCKED UP SEE HOW THINGS TURNED OUT THEY DOING WHATEVER THEY WANNA DO NOW ..

'Experts say something has to change' You don't need to be an 'expert' to realize that Chicago has run completely off the rails.

change leadership

This entire assertion is based upon the word of the president of the IL hotel and lodging association. That classifies him as an expert? Did he offer evidence to support his claims? Or are you just uncritically parroting this guys personal opinion? Any other potential factors?

It's not just these 'experts' saying something has to change.

I used to go to different steak houses downtown all the time and drop 500 bucks, No more. You degenerates can have it.

It takes 'experts' to figure out that 'something must be done?' A rock with an IQ of 0 could have done that.

This isn't rocket science.

We will all flee is fast as possible!!!!!!!!!!! Woke policy is killing everyone

The Media is as much to blame as Lightfoot, you have blood on your hands CBS!

They are looking for any excuse to start looting again.

If you listen closely, you can hear the symphony of pearl clutching suburban whites & implants

When is enough enough 😢🙏?

Is that the definition of duh?

They ignored the bus drivers who complained about the violent passengers. They ignored the cashiers who were watching their stores get looted. But now the 'experts' have spoken.

You’re kidding

It takes an expert to figure that out?

TaraMolinaTV It is keeping people from Oak Park and other suburbs from going into the City as well! I would never take the El now! It is a terrible thing to do- to allow Chicago to belong to the lawless streets.

Mayor Larry, Kim Fox and Judge Evans all need to step down now, those are the changes needed

Crime by ______?

Yea what needs to change is leadership! PERIOD

Savages

This has been brewing for decades though. A take if two cities.

Go vegan, stop living like our primitive ancestors, wearing leather and furs, eating carcasses, drinking mammary secretions of bovine animals. Notice no mass murderers are vegan. Meat and dairy are derived from violence. Violence begets violence.

I agree something has to change in the downtown area on state street.

Tell the experts to change them then.

Doesn’t take an expert to know that

Tell them there's a detention center, a record, a mug shot, booking, and ride in a squad car waiting for them. If they get ornery, put them on the way to the hoosegow. That will teach them- the whole process. Let them spend a few nights in a cell.

Defund the police more?

The mayor and governor is what has to change.

Lori our Little Martian might want to steer away tourists from 'The Bean' for the sake of those who don't want to be bean paste. Who shot him? What insanity! At the Bean of all places, where hundreds of tourists visit every day, where Obama celebrated his historic win. Condolences to the family during this painful time.

Very sad but why was he there? I do not get the 'scared of crime' narrative here. Tragic....but the real criminal activity is perpetrated by black teens and twenties. Wasn’t so scared being part of the mobs out there.

Crime & Housing Among Factors Dragging Mile High City Down On List Of Best Places To LiveIt used to be the source of bragging rights in Denver; a ranking in the top five of the best places to live in the country as ranked by US News and World Report. But, last year Denver dropped to 14th on the list. This year, the Mile High City is all the way down to 55th. I wonder if we had at least 1 Republican as either mayor or governor, if our crime wouldn't be as bad. Denver is full of crime, homeless, shootings. Downtown is not well. Head to the burbs!
