Crews face challenges getting to scene where two skiers died in late-season avalanche

A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter carries rescuers from Hidden Valley Park, Thursday, May 9, 2024 Thursday, May 9, 2024, in Sandy, Utah. One skier was rescued and two remained missing following an avalanche in the mountains outside of Salt Lake City. The slide happened after several days of spring snowstorms. Unified Police did not release identities following the incident on Thursday.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff's Office — not directly involved in Thursday's search but experienced in similar operations — talked about the dangers. The unpredictable nature of the backcountry in spring furthered complications. One of the hikers managed to dig himself out and was airlifted to safety.

Incident command ultimately decides whether it's safe to continue a rescue effort, which did not occur on Thursday, leaving two families grieving.
