An off-duty Fremont police officer came across the scene near Fremont Boulevard and Thornton Avenue around 12:30 a.m., the Fremont Police Department said in a news release.The driver was killed in the crash, police said. The death marked the city’s third traffic fatality of the year.
The officer pulled a passenger out of the car, police said. He was taken to an area hospital for medical care.The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police said excessive speed appeared to be a “significant factor.” It was not immediately known if alcohol or drugs also played a role.
