The city-owned utility is waiting on the green light from the state grid operator to shutter 859 megawatts of generation at the plant at Elmendorf.

CPS Energy has made official its plans to shut down part of the Braunig Power Station, another step toward the city-owned utility’s long-term goal of reducing its reliance on fossil-fueled power plants as it transitions to renewable energy. According to a notice CPS filed with the state grid operator, it plans to cease operating the three oldest natural gas-fired Braunig generating units by March 31, 2025. The power station began operating in 1966.
