Face coverings must be worn despite restrictions easing in England on 19 July, London's mayor says.

London is the first English city to insist on face coverings after Covid restrictions ease.

The rules for masks apply in shops and public transport - as well as pubs and restaurants when not seated. The London Mayor has said that as well as suppressing the virus it is also about giving passengers confidence. A government spokeswoman stressed there would be a shift from "universal government diktat to relying on people's personal responsibility".

However, it said: "We now have the ludicrous position where a passenger travelling through London will have different rules on the Tube and the mainline services."
