Rishi Sunak says the government will 'do everything we can' to recover billions stolen by fraudsters.

, HM Revenue and Customs said funds had been lost to fraud, including 2.5% of the £19.7bn delivered through self-employed support.

In response, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "No, of course not. We do not support fraudsters or those who steal from the public purse." He said the government had invested more than £100m in an anti-fraud taskforce with 1,265 staff. He said 3,000 one-to-one enquiries were opened in 2020/21 and HMRC wrote to 75,000 people.
