Mickey Guyton has spent years reaching for a mainstream breakthrough in a country music industry willing to embrace hip-hop sounds — but not black artists. Her new song 'Black Like Me' is a statement: She's ready to do things her way.

The lyrics land with the heft and authority of autobiographical reflection, especially the way you describe being othered on a small-town playground and watching your dad work twice as hard to provide the family stability.

I carried the book around with me forever, because I studied black history in college. You just realize, when we study history in our regular classes, black history is glossed over. You learn about Martin Luther King, the Civil Rights Movement, Jim Crow laws, Rosa Parks and everything else just kind of gets jumbled into one thing. Unless you dive into black history, you don't really know everything. I took this class at Santa Monica City College, [taught] by a UCLA professor who was amazing.

That's a really good question, because the reality of it is everything was always available to me. ... Me trying to please and to fit in hindered a lot of that. I admit that. I mean, people were telling me I can't. But I also have a mouth where I can say,"No, but I can." ... I know people believed in me, but I don't think they were sure of me. Their certainty in me wasn't available to me. And that was really, really hard.

This is great. Like Elvis always had beautiful singers in his band. I’m happy she is rocking the microphone! U go girl.

'Black on Black Crime' Is A Myth, And Here's WhyWhenever black people try to talk about police brutality, it is inevitable that a white person will come in and say, “What about black on black crime?' Are you serious? So the hundreds of black people who get killed by black people everyday in places like Chicago just don’t count? So DavidDorn didn’t matter? He was a retired police officer who was killed by a black man. I guess not since he was a peace officer. If it was a looter killed by him, I guess his life would have counted for something. You’re trying to hard to shove your crap down our throats! While I understand your message your statistics regarding officer involved shootings of blacks v whites is inaccurate. Please research.
