Country music legend’s granddaughter shares emotional message after ‘American Idol’ performance

Russell is the granddaughter of late country music legend Loretta Lynn, and she took the “ Idol ” stage and sang “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”It was a performance filled with raw emotion — audience members, fellow contestants and judges shed tears — and it may have marked a major moment in Russell’s life beyond the stage.Meet Pa.

“Guys, I’m just laying in my bed, and I have so much gratitude for what is going on,” she says as her voice breaks. “We all have highs, and we all have lows, and then you find out this low was because of this and this high was because of this. I just was closing my eyes and listening back to ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ whenever I did it on ‘American Idol,’ and I just saw like a vision of me being up in Heaven.

“I choose this song not because Loretta Lynn is your grandma,” Perry said, her voice cracking. “I choose this song because you are Emmy Russell, and you can do anything now as Emmy Russell.”In the lead up to the song, she also shed a few tears, but she was determined heading out to perform.
