Political leaders, community advocates and activists are cheering Kamala Harris' addition to the Democratic ticket as a powerful elevation of a woman of color — one that could change the perception of who is seen as a leader in the U.S.

Brown, a co-founder of Black Voters Matter, was one of the activists whoand his team to select a Black woman to join him on the ticket. Her phone rang, and a friend told her,"We won. We've got a Black VP."

Political leaders, community advocates and activists are cheering Harris' addition to the Democratic ticket as a powerful elevation of a woman of color, one that could change the perception of who is seen as a leader in the United States. "Joe Biden had the audacity to choose a Black woman to be his running mate," Harris said."How incredible is that? And what a statement that is about Joe Biden that he decided that he was going to do that thing that was about breaking one of the most substantial barriers that has existed in our country, and that he made that decision with whatever risks that brings."

Mythili Sampathkumar, a freelance journalist who is on the board of the South Asian Journalists Association, said her parents sent her a message after Harris' selection, saying that they were proud that the world is recognizing South Indian women. But her own feelings have been complex.

Kamala Harris voted against a bill that would set requirements to care for infants born alive after a failed abortion. Instead Senator Harris voted on the side that would allow the newborn baby to suffer and die without any medical care given to the baby to save its life.

Identity politics should be rejected.

Now that is one good, Noble, political picture

Will her family be paying reparations for being slave owners? Or do we not care about that anymore?

It could, despite her failure as a leader

'In your face' is not a leadership quality.

She serves the donor class the same as Biden. No diversity on that will ever be allowed on a Democratic ticket.

Voters, not so much.

activists.

It’s about time!

This is just so awesome, so truly inspiring. It almost makes me inclined to dream that someday in my lifetime we might even have a Black President!

What about her father bragging about owning slaves?

How many articles extolling diversity while reducing Harris to a stereotype will we see this year?

Pretty sad the only reason dems are supporting her is because she's a poc

A curious selection.

NPR made their selection of the party they would endorse prior to Biden or Harris being selected....or even Trump being selected in 2016

Even their own democratic party hated her so much she didn't even make it to Iowa. But now she is so awesome.

Many didn't and don't consider her black, but brown, especially since she married outside the religion and race in a Hindu ceremony, and was a merciless prosecutor of blacks, etc. Blacks wanted a black woman who has long roots in America, the ones senile Biden passed over. UGH!

Please also report on the hate she is receiving from certain factions of the black community

Ok, if she is so wonderful, why did you skate over her before instead of picking another fossil.

The same kamala that didn't prosecute pedos in the church? Or blocked DNA evidence? That kamala?

npr why is no one in the news discussing the owner of the lolsurprisedolls Isaaclarian he is obviously a disgusting human being and most likely a pedophile. It’s clear that he is paying off the news and the social media accounts because all the content it’s getting deleted.

A hundred years after the 19th amendment is passed and we're just now getting that a woman can sit in high office?

Thank you npr for being honest. Nope not all Indian-Americans are excited or thrilled or claiming her as our own and we aren’t a monolith. We had nutxases before and now Bobby, Dinesh, Pramila and Ro Khanna and sensible ones like Raja Krishnamoorthi, Nikki and more

How much in reparation's are her family buying for keeping hundreds of slaves. Buying and trading human beings?

She needs to pay reparations for the slaves her family owned.

Cool, nothing changes people's lives for the better more than perception.

I strongly believe that someday we will cheer a person as a 'Strong Leader' and her accomplishments, who has been added to a ticket - without her gender, her race, without her origins playing a role. That someday might be a normal day when AOC is on a ticket

Yeah, like President Obama!

This is a great move. As was the presidency of BarackObama

Her family owned slaves. nough said.

Shouldn’t we judge by the content of our character and not the color of our skin? Maybe that was just a dream...

how is this news?

Wow. She is just plain awful

Sarah Palin says she hopes media treats Kamala Harris 'fairly,' but 'no kid gloves'Sarah Palin said she hopes the media will treat Joe Biden's vice presidential pick, California Sen. Kamala Harris, 'not as personally rough' as they treated her in 2008, but that shouldn't mean she's given a pass. It's inevitable. They will ask Kamala questions. Unlike Sarah, though, Ms Harris will know what she's talking about. Sigh. It was inevitable that she would come crawling out from some rock in Alaska. Why is she taunting us with such stupid statements? sarahpalingoaway(again) I’m pretty sure that Ms Harris can name a few newspapers she reads regularly, so she already has a head start.

Howard University's history of producing trailblazing Black leaders on display with Harris pickSen. Kamala Harris' selection as the first Black woman to be named to a major party's presidential ticket has brought attention to her alma mater, Howard University, one of the country's most prominent historically Black universities. How many people have you seen gasping for air while a global pandemic is in effect caused by a respiratory disease? Black? Mmm. Moving on, the real 'black' people & all other people of different skin color will reject her as a 'black' person. She isn't 'black' & to pretend to be will offend many. It's offensive to say you're 'black' when you are not. People look at you & tell you your color... The political coup by the HBU sorority class, & corner stone of the upcoming Dem strategy against America: historically oppressed black women vs systematically racist white men. What a Biden-Harris White House Could Mean for Tech PolicyPresumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s selection of Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate suggests Big Tech might avoid the hammer blow of a breakup if the ticket wins the White House. You do realize that she is the absolute farthest left Senator in Congress, to the left of Bernie Sanders a card carrying Communist. So, no, she isn’t a moderate, not even close to being a moderate. She is a radical leftist. Kamala has backbone which will be a great threat for President Trump Less pushback on Chinese trade practices and IP theft.

'One of us': South Asians celebrate Harris as VP choice“Kamala Aunty': Joe Biden's selection of Kamala Harris as his running mate is generating glee among many South Asians worldwide and putting the spotlight on her as the first person of Asian descent on a major party presidential ticket. For those that don’t understand “Aunty and uncle” is a term of endearment used for elder people they feel comfortable with, in some Asian countries. JoeBiden and KamalaHarris should meet with AndrewYang and strategize how best to pull YangGang into organizing best grass roots efforts. We will win and need to make sure we WIN BIGLY! She’s no longer black? Seems the gullible Black line didn’t work let’s try the Asian line. I’m black and I find these projections insulting and hilarious.
