A statement from Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said foreign governments with access to connected vehicles could pose a serious risk to U.S. national security and the personal privacy of U.S. citizens. Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul praised the initiative, issuing a statement that described the data security of connected vehicles as an issue critical to national security, especially when manufactured by China-based companies.
It said the United States led the world in production of connected vehicles for much of the past two decades, and sold nearly 16 million vehicles in 2023. It said China is now the clear global leader in such technologies, outpacing connected vehicle production in the rest of the world since it constitutes the world’s single largest car market, where more than 30 million vehicles were sold in 2023.
