Boeing has been under intense scrutiny since a door plug blew off an Alaska Airlines flight shortly after takeoff in January. The company's CEO was in the hot seat on Capitol Hill this week and grilled by senators about multiple safety lapses and close calls that put airline passengers at risk.

Aimer says Airbus can't really take advantage of the situation because the company is making planes as fast as it can. It faces a backlog of 8,598 orders, due in part to supply chain strains. Airbus also already outpaces Boeing for orders and has for five straight years. Last year, Airbus reported 2,319 gross orders -- the highest number of orders recorded by Airbus. More than 1,800 orders were for the A320 Family, which are assembled in Mobile. Boeing had 1,456 gross orders last year.
