Police say a sedan hit the back of a tractor-trailer at a 'highway speed' before it caught fire, killing the driver.

The crash happened around 2:02 a.m., at mile marker 42 on Route 222, according to Ephrata police.

The coroner said the female was driving a sedan, which police said was southbound on Route 222 and hit the back of a tractor-trailer that was stopped on the side of the road. Police said evidence suggests that the female was driving at a “highway speed” when she hit the tractor-trailer. The sedan caught fire, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the only one in the car.

The driver was killed by multiple traumatic injuries with smoke inhalation and thermal burns, the coroner’s office found at the autopsy. The death was ruled accidental.Police ask that anyone who witnessed the crash contacts Officer O’Hanlon at 717-738-9200 x 272.
