Coaches Cori Close of UCLA and Tara VanDerveer of Stanford say it's critical to fight athletic gender discrimination at places like Riverside City College.

No. 2 Stanford holds No. 8 UCLA scoreless the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter en route to a 72-59 victory at Pauley Pavilion.

“I’m wildly grateful myself because we are walking on a trail that others blazed,” Close said. “The great news is that women’s sports is not a charity case anymore. TV ratings are up, ticket sales are up, more and more corporations want to invest in women in sport.” “That’s where I love that we have each others’ backs,” Close said. “It’s really hard, if I’m being candid, when you sort of have to fall on the sword. I look at people that have really fought for it, and even if they’ve won, they lost their jobs and no one wants to hire them again. The WNBA is looking to increase revenues through a mixture of sponsorships and marketing so players like Brittney Griner don’t have to go overseas.
