Copa America 2024 gets underway on Thursday, June 20 with the holders, Argentina taking on debutants Canada. In a group that's essentially a battle for second, can Canada find a way to overcome Chile and Peru? Our very own Chris Vasile breaks down Group A.Group A kicks off Copa America proceedings on Thursday, June 20 with a meeting between the current holders Argentina and debutants Canada.
However, if that doesn't come to fruition, fear not. Peru's defense is less than stellar, giving up eight goals in six CONEMBOL World Cup qualifying matches and an additional _____ in their last two friendlies. They've been in blistering-hot form with just two losses since 2021 — a span of 30 games. They are led by the greatest of all time, Lionel Messi, and with him wearing the shirt, Argentina are more than capable of defending their crown.
This Chilean team currently sits eighth out of 10 in World Cup 2026 qualifying with just five points through six matches. This is a team with very limited attacking options and one that will try to soak up as much pressure as possible before snatching a winner at the death. Canada make their long-awaited debut at Copa America and believe it or not, I give Canada a very good chance at progressing through to the knockout rounds.
If the midfield can hold up against two teams in Chile and Peru who are struggling for form, Canada could very well win both those games.
