But rebuilding consumer confidence isn’t a sure bet during what could be a volatile autumn season for many Americans.
Ipsos, which surveyed 923 respondents online on Sept. 15 and 16, provided the results exclusively to Forbes Advisor. The survey is conducted weekly to track consumer sentiment over time, using a series of 11 questions to determine whether consumers feel positively or negatively about the current state of the economy and where it looks to be going in the future.
That measure hit 46.4 this week, an increase of 6.3 points over last week. But it’s still considerably lower than early March levels. Indexes measuring investment confidence and job security have also linger below pre-pandemic levels.People under 35 are the least confident, with a national index of 49.1, compared to the most confident age group at 55+, measuring just over 10 points higher.
“People who are in college or just starting their careers are in a precarious place,” said Chris Jackson, senior vice president and head of polling at Ipsos, noting that continuing hiring freezes may limit job prospects for new graduates and other early career professionals. “In the 55-and-up group, a big chunk of those people are retired and don’t have firsthand information about the job market.”
I’m willing to bet we’ll see it drop soon, as most signs are pointing to another surge in the coming weeks
