Texas A&M University-San Antonio is starting construction on a $55 million Public Health and Education Building to prepare students for careers in community and environmental health and other fields. The 35,500-square-foot structure will expand the school’s medical research and training to allow future health care professionals to improve services and close health inequities in San Antonio, the university said in a release.
Hospital planned at A&M-San Antonio through University Health partnership It also will support new programs, such as A&M-San Antonio’s public health genetics and genomics laboratory. Currently located on the North Side at the San Antonio Technology Center, the lab studies genetic disease factors and will relocate to the new building once it’s completed.

Texas A&M University System regents approved $258 million in capital projects in February that funded the public health building as well as facilities in Corpus Christi, Galveston and Laredo. A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Thursday by the university’s Classroom Hall.
