Allen was in it to win it. Chargers ownership was not.
It became obvious early in Allen's rookie year he was better than most of the receivers taken ahead of him, including the first one, Tavon Austin. He made defenders look woozy. He showed the toughness that led Alabama's Nick Saban to recruit him at safety, where he'd won all-state honors in North Carolina. Other than Darrelle Revis, the Jets' Hall of Famer, no NFL cornerback locked him up for a whole game that I can recall.
