Congressman: The border is a mess. I’m part of a coalition working to improve it

On the other hand, as a Mexican American, I wholeheartedly believe in the American dream. My descendants, originally from Nuevo León, came to the United States in search of opportunity and fought hard for generations to earn their stripes. My grandfather, Jesus Peña, served in the armed forces, helped defeat fascism in World War II, and worked tirelessly as a blue-collar airplane mechanic at Kelly Air Force Base.

As a Hispanic Republican, I fight this tug of war every single day. I am not alone in this battle. I serve as co-chair of the Congressional Hispanic Conference in the U.S. House. Together with 17 of my Hispanic GOP colleagues, I have been on the front lines of a battle to improve our border security while honoring diversity and preserving the right to immigrate.

Through intense negotiations, the conference fought hard to strip provisions that robbed legitimate asylum-seekers of the right to plead their case in the United States. At the same time, we collaborated to put forth one of the most effective border security frameworks in American history. I am proud that several of the provisions I have fought for since my first day in Congress were included in this package.

Although House Republicans have taken a big step in the right direction, this alone will not stop the bleeding. The American immigration system is so deeply flawed that no amount of manpower or resources can stop the levels of illegal immigration our nation is dealing with. To accomplish that, Congress needs to pivot to long-term objectives, such as improving our temporary work visa programs and reforming an asylum system that is chock-full of loopholes.
