Congress May Fund Gun Violence Research For First Time In Over 20 Years

I am a writer, journalist, professor, systems modeler, computational and digital health expert, avocado-eater, and entrepreneur, not always in that order.Congress is poised to do what it hasn't done since the 1990's. to allocate $25 million for gun violence and safety research in this coming year. Let me repeat that. For the first time in over two decades, indications are that the U.S. Congress will provide funding for the study of gun violence and safety. Yes, you heard that correctly.

That was the year that funding for gun violence and safety research fell with a thud and stayed down for the count until this year. That’s despite the fact that thousands of people in the U.S. continue to die from gun-related injuries each year, with 39,773 perishing in 2017. That’s despite the fact that the rate of reported deaths from guns in the U.S. has continued to rise, from an age-adjusted 10.3 per 100,000 people in 2014 to 12.0 in 2017,.
