A wrong-way driver on southbound I-15 died after crashing into a bus transporting military personnel and forcing the closure of the highway at the start of the morning commute on Thursday, March 21, 2024. Utah Highway Patrol said they're seeing a startling number of wrong-way drivers so far this year.
On social media, many people commented saying they feel like there's been a lot of wrong-way crashes recently. Turns out, they're not wrong. UHP Major Jeff Nigbur stated last year, there were 22 wrong-way crashes and six deaths. This year already there's been seven wrong-way crashes and five deaths. "You're talking six fatalities last year and five this year, with only three months into this year, so that's concerning," Major Nigbur said. "They're not just numbers. They're fathers, mothers, daughters, and sons.""I guess that's the million-dollar question. I can't tell you how much we've done to try and figure that out and answer those questions. About two years ago, we created a wrong-way driver committee," Nigbur said.
"Realize you don't have a lot of time. Slow your speed... If you can at least slow down your speed, that takes those crash forces down just a bit," Nigbur said. "Also, put yourself in the shoes of the wrong-way driver, and they're typically extremely intoxicated and don't know where they are. In their eyes, they feel like they're driving the right way and on the right side of the road, so our recommendation is don't be in the left-hand lanes.
