Dallas Stars left wing Jamie Benn checks Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Noah Hanifin during the first period in Game 7 of an NHL hockey Stanley Cup first-round playoff series on Sunday, May 5, 2024, in Dallas.had a long break between the end of the regular season and Game 1 against Vegas in which they came out flat and started 0-2 in the postseason. Some of that had to do with a concert scheduled at American Airlines Center Wednesday, but nevertheless, Dallas has little time to prepare.

The Avalanche led the league averaging 5.60 goals per game in the Winnipeg series. After dropping Game 1, 7-6, Colorado outscored Winnipeg 22-8 in its four consecutive wins that followed. Cale Makar, Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon all tied for a team-high nine points. The Stars, on the other hand, had to take Vegas to seven games just to reach the second round. They’re battling some injuries to“I don’t think you go through a seven-game series against a team like that without it taking some toll on you,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “I think when you pay the bill for that toll, you never know when that’s gonna be. Is that a round from now? Is that two rounds from now? Is that in the summertime? Let’s hope we can push that off.

Like the Stars learned in the Vegas series, the first few games will be telling of the style they need to play. Dallas buckled down defensively after dropping two games at home to start the playoffs. While Colorado is a familiar opponent, no one expected the offense it generated in the first round. The Stars will learn Tuesday whether that is set to continue.

But even with the limited breaks and practice time in between, there’s only so much the Stars can change this time of year. They’re hoping the foundation they’ve set over the last eight months will be enough to carry them back to the conference finals.“We’ve had the group together all year,” DeBoer said. “There’s good chemistry there. They understand our systems. The foundation is in place. We’re not changing a lot of things series-to-series. We know how we want to play.
