With millions at risk of eviction, renters must come first as California's governor and lawmakers try to reach a legislative compromise with landlords.

The only thing that can save them now is a

“As I’ve said, we’ve had very good conversations and made tremendous progress. The progress includes considerations of large landlords, large apartment owners, small apartment owners, advocates for tenants and the like.” To be sure, the cost of failure would be unacceptably high for a state that, in addition to the number of people living in encampments under bridges and alleys, leads the nation in poverty when the cost of living is factored in. Those most at risk for eviction come Sept. 1 were living paycheck to paycheck before the COVID-19 pandemic and now have lost their jobs because of it.And yet, the powerful and well-funded California Apartment Assn.

Under AB 1436, warned Debra Carlton, the apartment association’s executive vice president, landlords “will lose their rental units and tenants will eventually lose their homes.”I wrote

Could we radically change housing policy - and actually help renters become homeowners? What about a pre tax savings plan and loan interest forgiveness for first time homeownership? First time homeowners over rich-getting-richer landlords please.

This is one of the most ignorant and unempathetic headlines I have ever seen. Newsflash: If landlords aren't paid, their debt increases. Many aren't corporate overlords who can absorb that. Fund support for landlords if you want them to stop 'whining'.

Will they be able to find someone who can pay the rent?

I wish we thought critically, a country is only as strong as it's poorest class. Basic economy, the poor spends more money then anyone else. Not because they can, but because they have to in order to survive. This 30 yr class warfare against working folks in this country is Sick.

Might as well call yourself LA Pravda and call for total confiscation of private property. What a dumb opinion! Some may’ve benefited from price incr but how about exorb taxes, endless fees, on top of mortgage and maint.Big appt units may be ok but small mom-n-pop landlords r fkd

Hell no. What a stupid article

When people can't afford food, Gov't helps them pay for it. Govt doesn't order markets to give away milk. But landlords are different, somehow.

There will be less housing in California. As property rights are set aside by fiat and then given to tenants the Times says to stop whining about it. Open your buildings and remove all locks, asshats. I just had 20 applicants for one unit and these people are without options.

No if you don’t want to pay rent.... go and live in the streets... don’t play around Athens people’s property

There is not a single, decent human being in journalism. They get the sociopaths who are too dumb to be lawyers, and too timid to be criminals. So they just cheer on the sociopaths in those other, nobler professions.

Unless it’s a business, there are a lot of people who struggled for the American dream to own property/real estate and they sure as hell are entitled to complain all they want. Don’t hate the player, hate the game!

City that doesn’t build public housing like other major cities complains about private landlords taking on the risk and opportunities 🤦🏻

Maybe if the government reps and the landlord leaders switched sides for a day, having to argue the others points, an intelligent, workable solution could be closer at hand. Perspective is an often overlooked tool.

Airbnb has done well during Covid. People have to pay for their vacays. No way I’m ever doing long term rental again in this commie state.

He’s going to make it all better...

The state should stop whining and allow folks to be free from paying property taxes.

The city should buy low incomeproperty at full value. Then let’s see who does the whining.

like those pesky rent payments, those monthly mortgage payments can induce a lot of crankiness

Let's all go squat in the condo of a LA Times columnist and see how long it takes them to whine about unfairness.

Yea totally, landlords should pay peoples bills, their own mortgages, insurance, fees, utilities, and everything else that goes into paying for rentals units. Screw landlords and THEIR families, they're not people, they're landlords- Democrats
