Even in death, Joe Ritchie is bringing a community together for the sake of the children who are its future.

There, speakers not only included “The Purpose Driven Life” bestselling author Rick Warren but dignitaries from multiple far-flung nations where Ritchie had made such an impact.Long-time Big Rock resident Joe Ritchie, who made his professional millions investing in options and commodities and his faith-driven mission investing in people around the globe, died in February before he could spearhead a program for youth in Aurora.

Before his death in February, Ritchie met with Aurora Police Chief Keith Cross and several other local leaders because his dream was to bring a similar effort to this city. Although he never got a chance to see that dream come to fruition, the family, including wife Sharon and son Anthony, are pressing forward.

Also weighing in on the power of teams and teamwork was Stephanie Marquardt, who runs the highly-touted Chicago Westside Sports program and an impressive young man named Brandon Wilkerson, who works with her in the city’s volatile neighborhoods. As program director, Robin Sterkel knows how many lives have been changed — even saved — through its summer camps and baseball leagues. Yet she was among the most excited at that crowded table as she listened to new ideas that could hopefully expand her programs to bring in more community partners that, would in turn, offer more services to more kids and their families.

Like I said, there seemed to be no egos at this table; only those who understood that far more gets done with high capacity/high character people who don’t care who gets the credit. As Marquardt pointed out to me earlier, “if you elevate a community, you elevate everybody, including yourself.”
