The Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack hit an industry that largely lacks federal cybersecurity oversight, and uneven digital defenses have left many oil-and-gas companies vulnerable to such hacks

Lawmakers from both parties said the incident reinforces the need to create new legal obligations for protecting critical infrastructure.

“The federal inability to prevent and effectively respond to cyberattacks turns our pipeline system into a risk for communities and an increasingly vulnerable component of our electricity system,” Mr. Markey said. The Energy Department also will launch a 100-day “sprint” to improve pipeline security, Ms. Neuberger said Monday, following a similar planto shore up electric utilities and more aggressively vet their foreign suppliers for potential cyber threats.
