UC San Diego continued a late surge down the stretch for the second straight season, sweeping its three-game Big West series with UC Riverside.
That was plenty of support for UCSD freshman left-hander Zack Ernisse , who allowed four hits over six shutout innings before handing off to the Tritons bullpen. USD took the first two games against the Broncos, winning 8-3 and 17-4 at Fowler Park, before getting edged out 3-2 on Sunday. Santa Clara avoided a sweep with an unearned run in the sixth inning.
San Diego State won its series at Fresno State, sandwiching a 6-2 loss between 8-4 and 8-5 wins. SDSU still remains five games out of fourth place — the final spot for the Mountain West Tournament the Aztecs will host — with nine conference games remaining. SDSU junior right-hander Troy Melton got the weekend started on the right foot by limiting the Bulldogs to two runs over 6 1/3 innings in the opener. Three-run homers by TJ Fontain and Brian Leonhardt provided most of the offense in the win.Tuesday vs. UCSD, 6 p.m.; Wednesday vs. Cal State Northridge, 6 p.m.; Friday-Sunday vs. Air Force, 6 p.m./6 p.m./1 p.m.Point Loma Nazarene moved within one victory of the 40-win plateau after taking three of four games over the weekend against Concordia.
