Pilots of crashed Lion Air Boeing 737 Max scoured a handbook as they struggled to understand why the jet was diving, but ran out of time before it hit the water, Reuters reports, citing three people with knowledge of the cockpit voice recorder contents.

Investigators examining the Indonesian crash are considering how a computer ordered the plane to dive in response to data from a faulty sensor and whether the pilots had enough training to respond appropriately to the emergency, among other factors.

The first officer did not specify the problem, but one source said airspeed was mentioned on the cockpit voice recording, and a second source said an indicator showed a problem on the captain's display but not the first officer's. "They didn't seem to know the trim was moving down," the third source said."They thought only about airspeed and altitude. That was the only thing they talked about."The manufacturer has said there is a documented procedure to handle the situation. A different crew on the same plane the evening before encountered the same problem but solved it after running through three checklists, according to the November report.

As the 31-year-old captain tried in vain to find the right procedure in the handbook, the 41-year-old first officer was unable to control the plane, two of the sources said.

How terrifying that to be.

Boeing are in the dock over this they knew and chose to ignore.

So airlines are not training pilots? I guess we should start demanding to see a pilots certification for the jet we're on.

Can you imagine how terrifying that must have been? That’s horrible...

More training, more training, more training..!

This is sad. I cannot imagine. RIP

It is incredibly heartbreaking to imagine this scenario playing out.

Boeing knew.

OMG!! BOEING KNEW THIS! IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE, MANY YEARS AGO A PLANE right after take off nose dived in to a building bc the baggage wasn't loaded right and a censor didn't correct the systems.

Boeing ceo should go to jail. I don’t care if your a millionaire star player in the nfl like Aaron Hernandez or a millionaire ceo like Boeing ceo. He should get charged with something criminal. He knew about this.

Air accident experts examining Boeing 737 Max 8 'black boxes'As the flight data recorders from Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 are analyzed, concern over the possible dangers of Boeing's 737 Max 8 aircraft continues to grow. The pilots in those 737 max accidents didn't have nearly enough training. If they had been in the US, under FAA rules, they would never have been in the pilot seats. The fact that Ethiopia couldn't do it themselves is telling. But they won’t do it in the US. Why?

Jump-seat pilot reportedly saved Boeing Max jet one day before Lion Air crashNew information from the cockpit voice recorder suggests the pilots pored over a handbook trying to determine why the jet was lurching downward, according to media reports. There is a 0% chance that I will ever fly a boeing max (insert ) aircraft. Ever. And I'm a pilot. So when they reported the incident, they just wrote it off? 'Records show that federal aviation authorities received at least 11 reports concerning perceived safety problems with the aircraft prior to the crashes.'

Yeah, yeah, yeah I almost wish I didn't know this. Doomed flight because the pilots were inadequately trained in this sophisticated aircraft. Sorry to sound callous but it is the truth.
