Cable news pioneer CNN will try to catch up to the streaming revolution, launching its own CNN standalone service ahead of the merger of parent company WarnerMedia with Discovery, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Other services – even relatively big ones such as Peacock, Apple TV+ and Paramount+ – likely will face challenges with churn and subscriber retention as they scrap for a share of the market with lesser offerings, according to the study. But the likely short-term challenges include a reopening economy, with people focused on something other than just watching streaming video on home screens.

Per that, CNN+’s big opportunity may be as part of a bundle tied to a possibly rearranged pair of additional streaming apps, one focused on entertainment and comprising most of HBO Max’s lineup, the other focused on reality and unscripted programming like Discovery+.
