Anderson Lee Aldrich, the suspect in the fatal shooting of five people at a Colorado gay nightclub changed his name more than six years ago after filing a legal petition in Texas saying he wanted to"protect himself" from a father with a criminal history.

The request for a name change came months after Aldrich was apparently targeted by online bullying. A website posting from June 2015 that attacked a boy named Nick Brink suggests he may have been bullied in high school. The post included photos similar to ones of the shooting suspect and ridiculed Brink over his weight, lack of money and what it said was an interest Chinese cartoons.

Jeremiah Harris, who is 24 and gay, said he went to the club a couple of times a month and recognized one of the victims as the bartender who always served him. Local and federal authorities declined to answer questions Monday about why hate crime charges are being considered, citing the ongoing investigation. District Attorney Michael Allen noted that the murder charges would carry the harshest penalty -- life in prison -- whereas bias crimes are eligible for probation.

Colorado Springs Suspect Anderson Lee Aldrich Charged with Murder, Hate-CrimesThe alleged gunman, Anderson Lee Aldrich, has been charged with five counts of murder and five counts of “bias-motivated crime that caused bodily injury,” following the mass-shooting at a LGBT nightclub late Saturday. A straight white male is murdered, government says that's a bad thing and the perp should go to jail for some time, maybe 20-40 years. Gay man is murdered and that's so much worse that we have to create more laws to punish that perp much worse, by automatically a life sentence🤨 By shotgun not assault weapon. Throw the book at him, they let him go a year ago. 😥

LGBTQ club shooting suspect’s troubled past was obscured by a name change, records showAfter suffering online bullying as a boy, Anderson Lee Aldrich altered his identity, documents confirm. There is an implication of causality in the lede that is then contradicted within the text of the article. Please correct the lede such that readers do not infer it is a known fact the name change was in response to online bullying. Uh oh, better not be deadnaming anyone Wapo. The CSPD had the ability to remove this man's weapons after a 2021 incident. He is clearly a public menace. CSPD bears some responsibility for this tragedy and should be investigated.
