Do you like the heat? Or would you rather it stay cool in Cleveland?

Zachary Smith, Cleveland.comCLEVELAND, Ohio - Summer 2022 is off to a hot start in Cleveland, starting with a record-tying 95 degrees, 14 degrees above normal on the first full day of the season, June 21, amid what was a hotter June than usual overall.

Summers being hot may seem like a non-issue, but the slow burn is part of the story, according to Climate Central climate scientist Daniel Gilford. The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center has already warned that “the June-July-August 2022 temperature outlook depicts elevated odds of above normal seasonal mean temperatures for most of the U.S.”In the Midwest, the city of Chicago and the EPA found that major heat waves have been occurring more frequently across the region for many decades, resulting in increased deaths and heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

In Ohio, it is difficult to identify trends as the number of deaths in any one year are few and nearly half of the documented 185 confirmed deaths related to exposure to excessive heat between 1999 and 2020 as tracked byHigher temperatures also worsen air quality by keeping pollutants closer to the Earth’s surface, creating ground-level ozone.
