CLEVELAND, Ohio — Braced for a fight after a first period that ended with a 1-0 deficit, the Monsters rose up from the depths and scored four unanswered goals in the second period to extended the Eastern Conference Finals back to Hershey with a 5-1 win on Saturday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
“Unfortunately the score was down 1-0, but we felt like our process was really good, we were competing hard and doing the right thing,” Monsters center Josh Dunne said. “We did talk about being rewarded, sometimes bounces go your way, sometimes they don’t. You have to keep the same process and I think we did a good job and that was one of those periods where some of those bounces started going our way.
“I felt good about our period after the first, came into the second playing our game,” Vogelhuber said. “They had chances too, we took advantage of ours, made them defend, capitalize on opportunities and pulled away there a little bit in the second period which is huge.” With the offense finding a much needed rhythm to ride into Hersey, the Monsters defense played a physical game while blocking numerous shots before they could get into net minder Jet Greaves’ territory.
“I think that’s an awesome saying, I think it’s really valuable for athletes, but for anybody really,” Greaves said. “It’s been important for myself and for us as a team with whatever happens, just let it go and be present in the day that’s ahead of you.”
