Cleveland Metroparks Zoo asks public to pick name for baby gorilla

The zoo is teaming with sponsor CrossCountry Mortgage to give people a chance to choose from three names for the infant gorilla:Participants can make a selection online by making a financial contribution at, or by voting in person at the gorilla habitat at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Money raised will be used in conservation efforts for lowland gorillas. Only 1,000 mountain gorillas remain in two populations in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo .

The zoo announced in November that the male infant was born on Oct. 26 to mom, Nneka, 23, and dad, Mokolo, 34. The zoo says newborn gorillas weigh about 3 pounds at birth and usually are in almost constant contact with their mother for the first six months. Infants nurse for about three years. In November, the infant developed pneumonia, requiring zoo experts to step in and provide 24-hour care. He was successfully reunited last month with Freddy and the troop following his recovery.
