'Speak out, represent, be present, and don't back down because by existing that's the biggest act of rebellion.' 👏 AAPIHM

My background is in painting. I've always wanted to express myself. I think I was lucky that my parents weren't the typical Asian parents that solely wanted me to do math or chemistry, science, and all of that. I dropped all of those subjects as soon as I could in high school because in New Zealand after a certain time, you can just pick whatever you want to study. I did print making, photography, painting.

I think creativity and the way I want to express myself has always been there for me. My mom loves clothes. She would save up all her salary just to buy clothes. So, I think it was with her and the fact that I wanted to actually connect with people through painting. Once you paint something, it belongs to the world for people to view, but clothing is different. You have a personal relationship with the audience. So that's how I picked fashion.

We have to continue to create. This is who are. Throughout history, whenever there were pivotal moments, it was always because of people creating, people pushing against, people fighting out of necessity. They'd invent something new or there'd be a new way of thinking, way of being. I pivot the creativity on different subjects whether it be cooking, planting, books to read, just different ways of engaging. It's all part of that creative conversation.I agree.

Before all of this, I felt comfortable. I didn't feel like people saw me as different or an outsider because everybody is different here. Coronavirus happened and you see Asian people getting attacked. It's the first time I ever felt like people are pushing me out of here, like I don't belong here at all and it's a really bad feeling. My team, three of us girls, we're all Asians.

I felt like I was the shy Asian girl in my class and at work and everywhere. Even when I started my own brand, the first two years, I was quiet. I listened to everyone, I'm not saying don't listen to anyone, but at the same time, honestly, listen to yourself. Just go for it and don't let people tell you what to do and what you cannot do. It's honestly BS.A couple of pieces of advice. Take a minute to slow down to figure yourself out especially right now.
