John Barbata, who played drums for such groups as The Turtles, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and both Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, has died at the age of 79.Born in 1945 in Passaic, N.J., Barbata first performed with the instrumental surf group The Sentinels in the early 1960s.
In 1966, he joined the group the Turtles and can be heard performing on their classic song, “Happy Together,” as well as their other hits, “She’d Rather Be With Me,” “You Showed Me,” “Elenore” and “She’s My Girl.” In 1969, he left the Turtles to join Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, replacing drummer Dallas Taylor. He can be heard on the live album, “4 Way Street.” In 1972 he became a member of Jefferson Airplane, and played on their last studio album, “Long John Silver.”
He later joined the Airplane offshoot Jefferson Starship, and performed on their first four studio albums before leaving in 1978 due to a car accident that broke his neck, arm and jaw.
