Just why is a Black actress playing Ariel controversial for some people?

Actress and singer Halle Bailey stars as Ariel in the new"Little Mermaid" movie. How can anyone be upset about this?Among the most moving videos on social media, last week, were those of Black girls reacting to Disney’s 83-second “Little Mermaid” trailer in which it’s revealed Ariel is Black.

Objecting to a Black actress playing an animated mermaid isn’t inherently racist But a fictional creature who is half woman and half fish isn’t inherently white although the #NotMyAriel swim club can correct me. There’s the argument that the nameless mermaid, which Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen created in “The Little Mermaid,” was white. She was white in the animated film , and she should be white in the upcoming movie.

“The Little Mermaid” isn’t real and is no more of a historical figure than the tropical fish and red crab who are her co-stars.
