An adrenaline-fueled thrill ride through a near-future fractured America balanced on the razor's edge. You’re probably expecting “ Civil War ” to be politically charged, leaning heavily to the right or the left wing. I hoped for something more balanced. I’ve been a fan of Alex Garland ’s for years. I don’t know what his personal politics are. Knowing the themes of his work, I could guess. Seeing as “ Civil War ” never dives into the stances of its factions, a guess is unnecessary.
“Civil War” is a drama with action scenes. Those wanting or expecting a popcorn movie are likely going to be disappointed. Some will find the film’s unwillingness to place blame on a specific political ideology frustrating. “Civil War” isn’t here to reinforce a particular belief. It is a cautionary tale that spreads the blame around. Some might say Garland is commenting on human nature. I don’t think the film is as negative as that suggests. It’s a warning. Steer clear. Danger ahead.
I love the cast. I’m impressed with the script. Some elements at the end feel a little heavy-handed. They also feel inevitable. How else do you complete the circle?
