Gender is complex and dynamic, and we need to get more comfortable with its breadth of identities, including but certainly not limited to: gender fluid, agender, androgyne, bigender, demigender, genderqueer, gender nonconmforming, cisgender, and transgender.

Gender equity is meant to be the presence of fairness for humans of all genders, manifesting in equal treatment or unique treatment. However, gender and gender equity have become synonymous with women and women’s rights. This is extremely problematic for two main reasons. First, because it alleviates men’s roles and responsibilities in the fight for gender equity. And second, because the needs and rights of humans with a gender outside of the binary are not considered.

The gender equity movement is fierce and diverse. In many ways, it is our most contemporary wave of feminism. Activists, leaders, educators, parents, and entire communities are working tirelessly to meet the needs and uphold the rights of marginalized genders, through the establishment of equal treatment or unique treatment. But the gender equity movement is not always—and not entirely—gender-inclusive. Equity is impossible when it does not include everyone.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification, and most folks think of the 19th Amendment as the ultimate turning point for securing women’s right to vote. However, despite contributions from diverse groups, only some women—white women—benefited from the Constitutional amendment. Black, Native American, Asian American, and Latinx individuals remained disenfranchised by direct, structural, and cultural racism until the mid- to late-20th century.
