Ready to Work's budget includes $6 million pot for companies to apply for and be reimbursed expenses for on-the-job training.

Before City Council voted on the new budget for the city’s sales tax-funded job training program, supporters of Ready to Work’s new focus on subsidizing companies to train their own workers defended the initiative.

“When you talk about the pilot and I saw Holt’s name in there and different businesses from the South Side, I knew that these were bigger businesses that understood the community that they worked in,” Viagran said. Ready to Work launched two years ago. The program, which voters approved in 2020, is expected to receive $240 million in sales tax revenue through 2025.
