While Americans go hungry we turn food into fuel instead of trying to figure out how not to waste food and feed people. Why not instead focus on efforts to make the food supply chain more efficient, or reduce the over-ordering of foodstuffs? Solving a problem the wrong way, it seems. 80 million pounds per year is about 4 ounces per year per person for the 320 million Americans. Not too bad. The original EPA report mentions 80 million tons - that is 500 pounds per person per year, or about 1,5 pound per day. That indeed is disconcerting.
