Make it clear, in a respectful way, that you are unavailable. For instance, set up an OOO if you need to focus, or update your Slack status if you're in a meeting.

Notifications at work have gotten so out of control — like after a while it is extremely overwhelming. I’m talking email, I’m talking Slack DMs — whichever way you are pingable. Message overload is nothing new, but it’s only gotten worse with the rise of virtual work that relies on this type of communication. So for me, you either respond to everything and feel destroyed at the end of the day or reply to some but feel super guilty about the rest.

DANIEL SIEBERG: At the time, Christine, I think it was driven by almost an intervention that was happening around me. People were concerned about the way that I was mismanaging my relationship with technology. And so I started by writing a blog. It’s definitely a self-help experience. DANIEL SIEBERG: You can pause notifications within Slack pretty easily, although I’m still struck by how many people haven’t seen that.

DANIEL SIEBERG: It can involve things like sitting down with your manager or your boss and setting the right expectations, even asking them some questions. When should I think of you as available or not available? Maybe open it that way to learn a little bit about the demands on their time. DANIEL SIEBERG: An example might be to set up an out-of-office notification that says not only am I out of the office for the next week, but I won’t be checking my email when I get back. And if you want to hear from me about whatever it is that’s important to you during this week, I’m going to need you to email me again on this day when I’m back in the office and then I will read it.

CHRISTINE LIU: Is this scary to anyone else? I mean, I have this fear deep down that something horrible will happen if I don’t respond to everyone. But Daniel, he’s worked in startup land to big corporations and everything in between and he brings a measured perspective.
