Yogurt company Chobani has stepped up to pay off the lunch debt of students in a Rhode Island school district that generated controversy by giving out cold sandwiches rather than a hot meal.
as a parent, news of #WarwickPublicSchools breaks my heart. every child should have access to natural, nutritious & delicious food, so @Chobani is doing our small part to help pay this debt "No child should be facing anything like this," Chobani CEO and founder Hamdi Ulukaya said in a message posted on Twitter."I know it breaks out heart, it breaks many people's hearts, and we need to step up. We'll take care of this school's bill because everybody at Chobani was heartbroken, and they're going to do something about it. But this is just a small move. We need everywhere, everywhere around the country, to eliminate this for all -- forever.
In the past, students were served hot lunches, even if the had an outstanding balance, The Associated Press reported. If a student does not have funds in their account, they are permitted to charge those items to the account, and the parent or guardian is then sent two notices informing them of the debt owed. The initial policy change would have mandated that If the debt is not cleared, a student could no longer purchase a la carte items and would be given a sun butter and jelly sandwich, vegetables, fruit and milk according to the district. Those are also included on the school lunch menu daily.

Are the hot meals really more nutritious? Better some food than none, but deep fried meat (🐔?), a load of ketchup, fapplesauce & cookies? All high in fats, sodium and sugars. Veg would be ideal, but less sugar and fat a great start. Is this a normal US school meal?

I did that for an elementary school (not the whole district) near me, for Christmas last year. Everyone was buying presents for kids and I wanted to do something different. The school told them a secret Santa did it.

The cold sandwiches were probably healthier than the cheap processed smiley faced nuggets and tater tots they were eating.
School lunch assistance is generous. If you can't qualify then you make enough to bankroll such a small expense. While Chobani does right by the kids, they're basically floating mom's manicure and braids and Dad's new cell phone. Parents are to blame for indulgent choices.

A cold sandwich is still a FN meal... people need to get a life. When I was school from 8 yrs old through 16 yrs old, all my lunches were cold. So... because I got cold sandwiches it doesn't count as a meal? Give me a break.

Thank you for doing this, I will buy your yogurt. Many kids depend on these meals and potentially could be the only meals they get from the time they get to school and the time they leave. School officials need to think about that.

It truly angers me that schools across the country address food insecurity this way. Instead of addressing the issue compassionately, they penalize children for their families’ financial struggles or adult oversight. It’s maddening!
