The divide between China and Europe over the war in Ukraine was on display this week

FILE - Chinese FAW V2 car is displayed at the Moscow International Automobile Salon in Moscow, Russia, Friday, Aug. 31, 2012. . As a Chinese envoy crisscrossed Europe for talks on ending the war, the Chinese foreign minster trumpeted the export of Chinese cars to Russia and Russian natural gas to China. The sharp rise in China-Russia trade is something the West sees as undermining its sanctions on Russia.

The war has created a deep division between the West and China that threatens Beijing's relations with Europe, a major trading partner, and further strained ties with the United States. “What is the use of sanctions against Russia after all these years of sanctions from the West?” said Li Xin, the director of the Institute of European and Asian Studies of Shanghai University of Political Science and Law. “Other countries should act like China. Pouring fuel onto fire and providing weapons and ammunition to Ukraine will never solve the problem.”

His meeting with Swiss diplomat Gabriel Luechinger in Brussels on Tuesday received some attention because China has yet to say whether it will participate in a peace conference that Switzerland is trying to organize in the spring.
