China says it has signed a security pact with the Solomon Islands, confirming an arrangement that drew objections from the U.S. and Australia in its draft form

China said Tuesday it has signed a security pact with the Solomon Islands, confirming an arrangement that in its draft form drew objections from the U.S. and Australia because it would allow Beijing to dock warships in the Pacific nation.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi of China and his Solomon Islands counterpart, Jeremiah Manele, “officially signed the inter-governmental framework agreement on security cooperation between the two countries the other day,” a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry told reporters in Beijing on Tuesday.

We’ve been listening everyday from the western media that a sovereign country can choose its security partner freely. So What right do the United States and Australia have to oppose the Solomon Islands signing a security pact with China?

I respect China more and more. They can do what they want and remain unpunished.

Only a man with dictatorship intentions of his own would sign a pact with China. My bet, Solomon Islands to become 1st authoritarian state in the Pacific

Why should the US and Aus care? We’ve all been told many times over the last months that sovereign countries can choose their own alliances without worrying what their neighbours think.

If it doesn't target a third party and good for local people , why should people bother about it?

Checkmate. Australian democracy is over. We have been outplayed in geopolitical strategy. China will simply park its missile boats in Honiara and pop the hatches whenever we even think about doing something they don’t like.

I wonder how much cash their PM received under the table from China for this deal.

Another step forward on the security aspect of the Belt and Road Initiative. Meanwhile, electeds in the US are more concerned with power to the party. Oh, and white supremists (insert eye roll)
