SHANGHAI—Tencent Holdings Ltd. pulled the plug on a test version of the blockbuster videogame “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” in China, after waiting more than a year for regulators to allow it to start charging money.

Tencent’s version of PUBG, as fans call it, became a hit in China after its release early last year, but the company never won approval to charge for in-game purchases in the free-to-play mobile game.
