SHANGHAI - China’s notorious dog-meat festival has opened in defiance of a government campaign to improve animal welfare and reduce risks to health highlighted by the novel coronavirus outbreak, but activists are hopeful its days are numbered.
The government is drawing up new laws to prohibit the wildlife trade and protect pets, and campaigners are hoping that this year will be the last time the festival is held. The coronavirus, which is believed to have originated in horseshoe bats before crossing into humans in a market in the city of Wuhan, has forced China to reassess its relationship with animals, and it has vowed to ban the wildlife trade.

The festival burst into thriving around 1997, probably because people became richer and dog meat and lychee became cheaper,once lychee was the most expensive fruit.When I was paid 90 yuan a month, the lychee was 10 yuan per kilogram

As far as I know, the custom of eating dog meat with lychee probably began in the early 1990s. As a native of the region born in the 1960s, I didn't hear that lychee and dog meat could be eaten together until 1992
Outsiders, especially foreigners, often think that Yulin Dog meat Festival is an official festival. In fact, it is not. It is a folk festival from the very beginning.
Most dogs raised here are not regarded as pets,they are just watch dogs used for helping their owner guard their house.
I am from Yulin ,and I was born and grow up there too, things are not so bad like what you describe. dog meat is eaten here all year round ,dog meat is very popular both in Guangxi and Guangdong Province .
