Chief justice's admonishment followed a note from Susan Collins

1 / 2Trump ImpeachmentSen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, arrives at the Capitol in Washington during the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020. WASHINGTON — Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts' admonishment of House impeachment prosecutors and President Donald Trump's defense team followed a handwritten note by Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.

Collins penned a note after House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler's comment about a “cover-up” by Senate Republicans for Trump, her spokeswoman confirmed. Senate rules ban senators from impugning each other. Collins told WCSH-TV in Maine that the partisan debate had become “too personal” and went beyond simply arguing the facts.

"I had heard both sides impugn the integrity of one another and also cast aspersions on the Senate," she said. “That is just not appropriate.”“I think it is appropriate at this point for me to admonish both the House managers and the president's counsel, in equal terms, to remember that they are addressing the world's greatest deliberative body," Roberts said. He asked them to “avoid speaking in a manner and using language that is not conducive to civil discourse.

Collins indicated afterward that she'll make her decision on impeachment on the facts that are presented, and said Nadler's comments won't affect her decision.

Jerry Nadler 'stunned' Susan Collins into writing a note to John RobertsSusan Collins was “stunned” by Jerry Nadler’s late-night diatribe this week against what he deemed a “cover-up” by Senate Republicans for President Trump — so much so that she wrote a note to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Shocked. Shocked I say. How dare he. *brow furrows clutches pearls* Nothing better sums up the Republican Party than clutching pearls at some display of civility not being met while being totally unconcerned at the actual crimes and injustices being raised Imagine how stunned she’s gonna be on November 4th 2020.

House and White House impeachment legal teams offer stark contrast on facts and styleAfter the opening day of the Senate impeachment trial proved so toxic that the chief justice rebuked both sides, the rhetoric cooled Wednesday - except from President Trump. Yeah, the House Managers work on fiction, while the Trump legal team works on facts. The problem here is not what he did. The problem here is that nobody in Washington thinks like Trump does, and then bases his actions on what they would do. Trump was elected for that reason It is time for CJ Roberts to rebuke Senators who leave their seats. Day 2 was the disrespect shown by SenateGOP leaving the Senate to do live Fox interview.

Senate passes McConnell impeachment rulesSenate passes resolution laying out a blueprint for President Trump's impeachment trial after nearly 13 hours of debate between House prosecutors and lawyers for the White House. Disgraceful and gutless action by Senate “Republicans”. Too afraid to seek the truth and be forced to make a decision. Dems win day one. Facts vs whining babies I honestly thought before today that there were some things I was Republican minded about and some things I was Democratic minded about. It seems like the 53 care more about a club and belonging to it, than helping the public hear the detailed truths about this situation. Sad.
