Chief federal judge in L.A. steps down over racially insensitive comments about Black clerk

The chief judge for the Central District of California, the nation’s largest federal court jurisdiction, which includes Los Angeles and its neighboring counties, has stepped down from that post, citing his racially insensitive comments regarding the court’s top administrative official, a Black woman.

“I have apologized to Ms. Gray, but I have concluded that a simple apology will not put this matter to rest. There will be division in the Court, unnecessary, negative and hurtful publicity, and a diversion from the Court’s essential mission of administering justice if I were to continue serving as the Chief District Judge,” Carney wrote in the email, which The Times reviewed. “I cannot allow the Court to become politicized and embroiled in controversy.

When Carney began discussing his adjusting to the role of chief district judge, his comments turned to Gray.

RevJJackson About racism among the staff and paper management. When will the acknowledge and apologize racist handling of Korean Americans during the 1992 LA Riots?

RevJJackson ”crack the whip” is also a racist comment.

RevJJackson In just do over racist white people on every level especially in our judicial system

CharlesMBlow Just one blk mans view. law clerks spend a lot of time one their education probably prefer to be known is uber clever or Einstein smart. This comes close to the line but I am not sure it crosses the line

CharlesMBlow 🤔What's the difference between a 'racially insensitive' comment and a racist comment? Asking for a friend.

CharlesMBlow “street” is often coded language. The woman grew up in the Valley from she was two yrs old and through hard work moved up in the court where she began working at 24 years old. She loves her Harley and reading and crocheting. He could have used another descriptor.

CharlesMBlow I guess I didn’t know it was a racial term. I am white and I was complimented about being street smart about the college community. (Diverse, but predominantly white) Maybe we have crossed a bridge too far to root out racism.

CharlesMBlow Perhaps we should be asking for more education as a prerequisite to the position of judge.

CharlesMBlow Good!

CharlesMBlow Pretty soon people won't be able to say anything lest they offend..anyone.

Everything is offensive.........if you want it to be.

WTF?

'Street smart' is now racist? We live in the dumbest time in history

His 4-year term as Chief of the Court began on June 1. He stepped down as Chief but remains as a federal judge on the Court.

does anybody miss this guy

Wow... this is ridiculous... And, he steps down so he give in to the wackos.

Yo yo

He was complimenting the black clerk and said: “Fortunately for me, we have just a fabulous clerk of the court in Kiry Gray. She’s so street-smart and really knows her job,” Some didn’t like him calling her “street-smart”. (hard to believe this is how far it’s come to)

As a person of color, I can honestly say that this is starting to veer towards the ridiculous zone.

What's the difference between 'racially insensitive' and 'racist'?

He’s too fragile. Time for Trump to install a better judge

street smart is a compliment in my opinion. It's not easy to get by in life without it.

...so what does the term 'street smart' have to do with race? I hear that term used all the time to describe people of all races. This is ridiculous.

But, but, but...
