The rebate program will pay residents up to $450 to cover some costs of home security cameras.

The city of Chicago will host two large gun buybacks later this year and launch a program giving rebates to residents who purchase private security cameras, Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Monday.

As of now, the city has budgeted $5.3 million through 2024 for a rebate program that will pay residents up to $225 per camera for a total of $450 at a home. The city will also pay $100 per safety light and vehicular GPS tracking up to $50 per device, among other costs, the city said.A Chicago police officer inspects guns during a buyback program in 2016.

Lightfoot officials are also in the process of raising $1 million from businesses and philanthropic donations to host large gun buybacks. Specific times, locations and eligibility criteria won’t be announced until a later date, the city said. But one event is scheduled for the summer and another for the fall, officials said.Lightfoot made the announcements Monday as she continues to field criticism over Chicago’s gun violence. The city experienced major crime spikes in 2020 and 2021.
