Sylis, 14, a student at Chesterton Middle School, died Tuesday night after he was hit by a train in the area of 15th Street in Chesterton in what authorities have deemed a tragic accident. His aunt, Xaundra Rodriguez, was too upset to talk on the phone but offered to share her thoughts about her nephew, who lived in Porter, via text. Sylis was struck and killed at approximately 7:10 p.m. Tuesday by a train at the North 15th Street grade crossing of the Norfolk Southern line, officials said. The engineer told investigators the teen never looked in the direction of the oncoming eastbound train. Chesterton Police are conducting an ongoing investigation with the assistance of Norfolk Southern detectives.“We feel for the young man’s family and the fellow students and the young man’s teachers,” Richardson said. “It’s a tragic accident.”
“This event has affected the entire school and grief counselors are available to students and staff members who have been impacted by this tragedy,” Bridget Martinson, public relations director for the Duneland School Corporation, said in a statement. “Additionally, counselors have been assigned to staff a support room while school is in session.”Richardson said he has been told a train passes through Chesterton every seven minutes. He said the town has had train fatalities every year or two.
