Cheap daily pill that combines four drugs cut the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart failure, study finds. By mylcheng.

FILE - In this Nov. 5, 2018 file photo, a drugstore employee reaches for medicine from shelf in downtown Tehran, Iran. According to a study published in the British journal Lancet on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019, researchers say a cheap daily pill that combines four drugs cut the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart failure in a large study, suggesting it could be a good way to prevent heart problems.

The pills contained two blood pressure drugs, a cholesterol medicine and aspirin. Many people can’t afford or don’t stick with taking so many medicines separately, so doctors think a polypill might help. A previous study testing one in India found it lowered cholesterol and blood pressure. The new study is much larger and gives stronger evidence because it tracked heart attacks, strokes and other problems — not just risk factors.

The benefit mostly seemed to come from lowering cholesterol; blood pressure didn’t significantly change. Side effects were similar in both groups. Some who developed a cough while on the polypill were switched to another version that substituted one of the four drugs. All of the drugs are cheap generic medicines now.

One study leader, Dr. Tom Marshall of Britain’s University of Birmingham, said the results show the polypill is a “viable strategy” to prevent heart disease in developing countries.

mylcheng When the study is paid for by the manufacturers of the drug.... “The study was paid for by Tehran University of Medical Sciences, a foundation and Alborz Darou, the company that makes the polypills.”

mylcheng This is a very poorly written article. Surprised AP would put it out like this.

mylcheng Shoveit up yo assss

mylcheng Polypill...hmm. 4 medications in one? I need a calculator. Ok, so that’s over 20 side effects for one pill? Great.

mylcheng Yes, you will be impotent, but....

mylcheng How were levels of statin induced diabetes?

mylcheng cannabis

mylcheng As someone nearly disabled by statins this cut and paste journalism really pisses me off. How about someone digs into statin patents Q10 enzyme and big pharma chasing profits on daily long term pills
