Published: Apr. 17, 2024 at 6:57 PM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - An omnibus education bill being considered in the Alaska Legislature is calling for more support for charter school s in Alaska, and more per-student funding across the state.
When the district receives its funding, it spreads that money among its schools. At that time, charter schools are subject to another funding formula. However, the district pays for other fixed costs. “Human resources, payroll, my office, accounting, purchasing, technology, Teaching and Learning, they don’t have those kind of departments stood up to support just the charter school. They benefit from the district’s infrastructure.”
This funding situation makes them costly to the district. “Within the same student enrollment, basically, we’re standing up another school,” DeGraw said.
